As of November 2014, schools must promote British values and are advised to do so through Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural studies, as a well as throughout the curriculum.
Accoring to Ofsted, 'fundamental British values' are (School Inspection Handbook from September 2015):
- The rule of law
- Individual liberty
- Mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith.
Abbey Court has an ethos and climate which promotes British Values at every level through a rich and varied curriculum, which includes opportunities for students to develop an engagement with democratic processes such as through participation in our School Council.
Through our Religious Education curriculum pupils are exposed to experiences of different faiths and cultures and are supported to explore aspects of their own and others' beliefs.
Our focus on the development of students' independence and self advocacy skills helps to prepare them for the wider world and for the richness of life in modern Britain.
